Our History
Chelmsford Karate has a rich history that dates back to 1984 when it was initially established at Springfield Green, Chelmsford by Sensei Gary Webber. In 1986, the club’s leadership transitioned to Sensei Kevin Nason (7th Dan), who, in 1988, relocated the club to its current home at Keene Hall Galleywood.
In 1996, to bolster the club’s presence and support its growth, Keith Bishop (7th Dan) launched his Dojo at Trent Road, Chelmsford. Notably, Sensei Keith was among the earliest students of the Springfield Green Dojo. This Dojo has since found a new home on North Avenue in Melbourne, Chelmsford.
A significant development occurred in 2010 when Sensei Bruce Harrison inaugurated a Dojo at the Heritage Centre in Galleywood, offering training for both kids and adults every Wednesday. This initiative eventually found its place at Keene Hall and is currently overseen by Sensei Kevin Nason. The instructors and students from all Dojos collaborate in a welcoming and friendly club atmosphere for the mutual benefit of all. Our club warmly embraces adults and children, whether they are beginners or seasoned martial artists, offering them the opportunity to learn a traditional martial art recognized worldwide.
Tragically, in June 2020, we mourned the loss of Sensei Keith, and his Dojo was passed down to one of his original students, Chris Clayton (4th Dan).
