What is Karate and Who are we?

More Than Just A Karate Club

Chelmsford Karate is not just about learning karate. It is a place of friendship. A place to find and meet new friends that share the same interests as you. Chelmsford Karate welcomes anyone who wants to meet new friends and train with like minded people.

Karate For Self Defence

Karate is one of the most dynamic martial arts. The trained karateist is able to co-ordinate his mind and body perfectly, thereby enabling him to unleash tremendous physical power at will. It is not the possession of great strength that makes a good karateist, rather the ability to co-ordinate mind and body. With this ability, even a small person finds that he has the power to deliver a devastating blow to any attacker.

Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate

Goju literally translated means hard/soft. “Go” means physical hardness and strength of character; “ju” is the gentleness which flows from It.; “Ryu” means style.

Chojin Miyagi (1888-1953), who developed Goju Ryu in Okinawa from the self-defence techniques which had come down through the centuries from China, felt that as the karateist achieves strength and skill through diligent training and gains physical and mental toughness, he also mellows and becomes a gentler, more selfless person.

Compared to an incomprehensible universe, all the things we know – People, nations, objects – are but small and insignificant, Rather than fighting and opposing everything, one should respect nature and try to attune oneself to the universe. “Go” and “ju” are opposite but equal. The karateist strives to achieve balance between them in his/her life.

The Value of Karate

Modern city life deprives you of the exercise necessary for fitness and mental health. Karate tones the body, develops co-ordination, quickens reflexes and builds stamina – without the danger of harmful injuries.

The practise of Karate develops composure, a clearer thought process, deeper insight into your mental capabilities, and more self-confidence.

Karate Is For You

Karate can be taken up by children and by men and women of any age. No previous training or proficiency in any sport is required. Whatever your physical condition, the training is carefully scaled to introduce you to this fascinating and dynamic art. Progress depends entirely on the individual and not on a group level; therefore you can join at any time and train according to your own wishes or the time available to you.

About Us

We practise traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu, which focuses on effective close-quarters fighting. We enjoy tournaments, but believe that the true heart of karate is self defence.

Our instructors include Police Officers who have used their skills on the streets many times.
